CHAPTER 11

MIA ABERNATHY

“Call me when you’re done and I will meet you at the park down the road,” Sam said as I slid out of the car.

“Roger that,” I said and gave her a fake salute. “Don’t get arrested when you break into the hospital.”

“I am not breaking into a hospital,” Sam quickly corrected. “I am just going to visit someone there and I might stumble my way into a dead woman’s office, accidentally of course.”

“Of course,” I said as I closed the door and Sam drove off. While I was going to break into Kyle’s house, Sam was going to get into Lyssa’s office. Splitting up seemed more effective and would hopefully be less suspicious.

Sam had dropped me off down the road from Kyle’s house. The neighborhood he lived in was full of mid-century modern homes. Many of them seemed to have been upgraded from their original finishings to a more modern look. I walked by manicured lawn after manicured lawn until I reached Kyle’s home.

“Jeez,” I mumbled under my breath. His house was painted a dark gray and had a large wooden front door. He had a larger front yard with a circular driveway. There weren’t any cars in the driveway, which was a good sign. Sam and I decided that it would be best to try to come during the typical workday because Kyle would be less likely to be home then.

I made my way around to the back of the house like I had done at Lyssa’s, though there was a higher chance that his back door would be locked because he was in a more typical neighborhood setting in town. I tried the handle and it turned easily.

“That’s weird,” I said under my breath. I was planning on needing to pick the lock, but I guess Kyle didn’t care about locking his doors either.

I slowly pushed the door opened and quickly stepped in, praying that nobody was home. The door creaked as I shut it. I held still and listened for any noise. When I was sure that I didn’t hear anything, I slipped off my shoes so I wouldn’t track in any dirt. I tip-toed into the kitchen, when all of a sudden, a dog started barking and ran into the room.

“Shh! Shh! Shh!” I said to the large golden retriever that ran up to me as I bent down and held my hand out to it. It didn’t seem mad but just wanted to say hi to the new visitor in his home.

“It’s okay,” I said with the tone of voice that I always use with my Flora as I scratched the dog’s ears. “What’s your name?” I asked while looking at his name tag as he panted into my face. The big puppy licked my hand, and I couldn’t help but coo to him, “Charlie, huh? You are such a sweet boy.”

“What are you doing here?” a voice said.

My heart dropped to my stomach. Fearing the worst, I glanced up and met Jonah’s eyes.
